RPF Rubavu Multipurpose Hall
A diffuser-based acoustic design that solves the whispering-gallery and focusing effects of a concave-walled hall, for balanced, even sound.
The acoustic design of the Rubavu multipurpose hall was shaped by a unique challenge: its concave walls.
The hall's concave walls naturally amplify reflections along their curved surfaces, producing the whispering-gallery and focusing effects. These concentrate speech or music in specific areas and leave sound unevenly distributed, diminishing the experience for the audience.
An innovative diffuser acoustic design was implemented to counter the defects of the concave geometry. The ceiling was engineered as a curated balance of sound reflectors and absorbing panels with approved Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) values for uniform propagation from stage to audience. The floor was fitted with an acoustic carpet, the walls fully treated with sound-absorbent materials, and acoustic doors installed to isolate the hall from external noise.
